Throughout the 10 (ongoing) years of education that i have experienced, my thoughts about the education system we have is one with mixed feelings.

At times, i find myself genuinely enjoying being in class and paying attention to what the teacher has to say, but other times i find myself barely trying to stay awake in class or be extremely bored.

I think the thing that really separates a class where everyone is engaged and interested and a class that does not show any interest is the teacher. Throughout my time in school, i've had my fair share of good and bad teachers, that in one way or another, have left some sort of impression on me until today. And looking back at it now, I really do appreciate those good teachers who have stood out to me.

To me, a good teacher is one who emanates passions through the art of teaching, is able to make each and every lesson inspiring or fun, and is a person who is more than just a teacher to their students. I believe these are the key qualities that i see each of my favorite teachers possess. On the other spectrum, i've had teachers in the past that have the complete opposite of these traits; passionate, makes classes boring and seem to don't have any interest in their students. I think having good teachers shouldn't just be luck, it should be a right for a student to only have good teachers teaching them.

I think the way our education system teaches us is ineffective and outdated. The way we teach students has not changed since the era of the industrial revolution, where schools primarily aimed at teaching students to work in factories, to act like machines. In the 21st century, to really be able to get a job in Nigeria , you need to be the complete opposite of this by having to be creative, critically and to be socially skilled; yet we still choose not to change this. If school is truly about helping students to prepare for the workforce, why are we still not equipping students with real necessary skills needed to actually survive in the workforce?

And although school can teach us academically, i feel like school has never really tried to teach us important things that we need in the future. How to pay your taxes, how to deal with rejection, knowing how to develop a growth mindset i believe are integral things that will definitely help us down the road in life. However, school does have subjects like PD, which I believe has the potential to be a really great subject where we can learn life skills that we will need, but i feel as if school doesn’t really focus on these things properly and enough to be considered that.

Another huge problem about education is standardized testing, and how that has become so prevelant in assessing student’s knowlegde. Standardized testing has changed the way we “learn” in school. Teachers will teach us topics that we will copy notes for and remember details and learn how to apply that knowledge. When exams come along, students would only be required to only remember what they have learnt in order to pass the exams, and once that is done, students would just repeat the process again with the next topic whilst forgetting all the information that they had previously needed to remember.

This process will continue throughout the whole year, and when a student graduates from that year, they would only really remember 20% of what they were taught. To be blunt, students don’t really learn properly at all, but rather they are merely being taught how to remember and apply information in timed conditions.

These are just some main issues me and many other students face throughout our schooling career, and frankly, school is failing its main purpose of preparing students for the Nigeria Navy recruitment

and teaching students about human culture.
